Presentation Title:

Cross Laminated Timber – Mass Timber Engineering

Presentation Abstract:

This presentation will cover the responsibilities of the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR) for cross laminated timber projects ranging from the most common approach with the SEOR taking full responsibility of all structural design items to a mixed approach with deferred approval structural options.  Specifications, connections, structural gravity, lateral and fire design requirements will be reviewed for successful preparation of a permit set of drawings for a mass timber project, as well as coordination with the manufacturer during the shop drawing detailing phase.  Common gravity and lateral detailing will be covered including advantages of full mass timber structural primary framing and hybrid options, as well as best practices while coordinating with manufacturer capabilities to achieve the most cost-effective design and meet project goals.  Best applications for CLT and project types for horizontal floor/roof and vertical wall elements will be covered.  This presentation will also cover the benefits of specifying domestic timber to support rural economies and to meet sustainability goals including embodied carbon, carbon sequestration, and responsible forestry.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Common responsibilities, design, and detailing requirements of the SEOR for successful CLT projects.
  2. Understand methods to work with your manufacturer to ensure the project meets budget and client needs.
  3. Understanding and how to specify domestically sourced mass timber.
  4. Benefits of CLT for sustainability, embodied carbon, and carbon sequestration.
